In 2022, Kindred Credit Union celebrated 25 years of Church Builder GICs by giving away $25,000 (five $5,000 grants) to help churches address food security and safe and affordable housing in their communities.
The recipients of the $5,000 grants are:
Creekside Church (Waterloo) who will be partnering with the 519 Community Collective to help provide “Warmth Bundles” consisting of sleeping bags, blankets, mittens, hats, etc. to folks living in tent encampments in the city. They also plan to provide warm soup each week to the residents of one encampment. Their video can be found on their Facebook page.
Destination Church (St. Thomas) currently provides lunches to 96 children in 6 schools at a cost of $2,500 per month. The grant will allow them to operate for 2 whole months.
St. Luke’s Anglican Church (Creemore) operates a food bank in a small, underserved community. The need for their services is growing and they have partnered with local businesses to lower food waste. They hope to acquire a small, portable building to operate the food bank out of. Watch their video online here.
Siloam United Church (London) developed some of their property into an urban garden and have donated 4,000 lbs. of food in 2022. They plan to increase their capacity to provide fresh vegetables through partner organizations and also provide directly to the local Oneida community.
Stirling Avenue Mennonite Church (Kitchener) is addressing the affordable housing crisis by increasing their capacity to provide housing to low-income individuals and families. Their video is on their Facebook page.
“We recognize the positive impact of churches in our communities in terms of food security and safe and affordable housing,” says Ian Thomas, CEO. “After the challenges of the last two and a half years, we are so pleased to help these five churches in this important ministry.”
There were 100 entries for the Church Builder 25th Anniversary Contest, highlighting a vast range of projects from all across the province.
