Fraud prevention alert: Be aware of phishing scams

Phishing is the fraudulent practice of sending electronic messages (email, text, and social media) claiming to be a reputable business or someone you know in order to trick you into giving them personal information We’ve all received that email: someone you know needs your help and they want you to send them money. By targeting our emotions or impersonating someone we trust, fraudsters can successfully “phish” us.

More and more people are falling victim through social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.). Be alert to “too good to be true” deals that range from job scams, investments, rental units, and Buy n’ Sell sites.

You might see a product online that you want and send an e-Transfer for the purchase, only to never receive the item. Research new websites and be sure they are secure.

You may receive a cheque through email as a form of return on your investment. You cannot deposit a cheque sent to you by electronic means! Cheques can only be deposited if you have the original draft. Depositing an e-cheque is an illegal form of payment and will be returned.

It’s important to be aware of the many different types of online phishing scams out there to protect yourself and your finances from being taken advantage.
